Maytag Refrigerator E6 Error: Door switch fault
What Does Maytag Refrigerator Error Code E6 Mean? E6 on a Maytag refrigerator indicates a Door Switch fault. The door switch tells the main control board whether a door or drawer is open or closed, enabling the board to control interior lighting, dispenser lockout, and evaporator fan behavior. When the switch fails or its actuator […]
Quick Assessment
Answer to continue safely
Is it safe to keep using?
Maybe. The refrigerator and freezer continue cooling with E6 active, but the interior light staying on raises compartment temperature slightly and increases energy consumption. The dispenser may be locked out. Schedule repair promptly.
Can I reset the code?
No. E6 returns immediately after any reset because the door switch hardware fault persists. The switch, actuator, or harness must be physically repaired.
When to stop immediately?
Stop if you notice: Interior light remains on continuously, accelerating food spoilage from heat, Switch plunger shows no physical travel when pressed — switch is seized.
Symptoms You May Notice
Interior light stays on with the door closed
The board believes the door is open because the switch reports an open circuit, so it keeps the interior light energized — which also causes the compartment to warm from bulb heat over time.
Dispenser does not respond when the door is closed
Maytag MFI and MFX dispensers lock out when the door switch reads open, as a safety measure. E6 causes the board to perpetually lock the dispenser even with the door shut.
E6 appears on the display and the OP alarm may also trigger
The E6 fault code appears on the Maytag control panel and the door-open OP alarm may activate simultaneously, since both are driven by the same door switch signal.
Interior light stays on 24/7
The compartment light remains lit even with the door fully closed, warming the interior.
Possible Causes
Failed door switch (switch stuck open)
The plunger-type or magnetic reed door switch has failed in the open position, causing the board to permanently read the door as open regardless of actual door state.
DIY PossibleSwitch actuator physically damaged or missing
The plastic actuator tab on the door that depresses the switch plunger has broken off, so the switch is never compressed when the door closes.
DIY PossibleDoor switch harness wire broken
A broken conductor in the two-wire harness between the door switch and the main board shows as a permanent open circuit to the board, mimicking a failed switch.
Requires ProfessionalSafe Checks You Can Do
-
1
Manually press the door switch plunger and test the light response
With the Maytag refrigerator door open, locate the door switch plunger (a small button in the door frame or hinge post area). Press it firmly with a finger — the interior light should immediately extinguish. Release it — the light should return. If the light does not respond, the switch is failed or the actuator is damaged.
On Maytag MFI French door models the fresh food door switches are located at the top-center of the door opening. The freezer drawer switch is typically on the right-side rail.
-
2
Inspect the door switch actuator tab
Visually inspect the corresponding actuator tab on the door panel that is supposed to contact and depress the switch plunger. A missing or cracked actuator prevents switch engagement. The tab can be replaced with a new actuator clip on most Maytag MFF and MFI models without replacing the entire switch assembly.
Actuator tabs on Maytag French door panels are made of brittle plastic and commonly break off after years of door cycling. Check the door gasket area for broken plastic fragments.
When to Call a Professional
Contact a qualified technician if:
- Switch tests open on multimeter continuity with plunger depressed (should show continuity)
- Harness conductor broken inside insulation — not detectable by visual inspection alone
- Door hinge wear has shifted door panel alignment away from the switch actuator
