Maytag Refrigerator E5 Error: Ice maker fault
What Does Maytag Refrigerator Error Code E5 Mean? E5 on a Maytag refrigerator indicates an Ice Maker fault. This code appears on Maytag Ice2O, MFI, and MFX French door and side-by-side models when the ice maker module has not completed a harvest cycle within the maximum allowed time window. The board sets E5 to distinguish […]
Quick Assessment
Answer to continue safely
Is it safe to keep using?
Yes. E5 relates only to the ice maker module. The refrigerator and freezer sections continue operating normally. Food safety is not affected, though ice production is unavailable.
Can I reset the code?
Yes. Pressing the ice maker test button initiates a fresh harvest cycle and clears E5 if the underlying module is functional. If the module has failed mechanically, E5 returns after the next cycle attempt.
When to stop immediately?
Stop if you notice: E5 returns immediately after the test cycle completes, Harvest motor is audible but the ejector arm does not rotate.
Symptoms You May Notice
Ice maker has stopped producing ice for 24 hours or more
The Ice2O or MFI ice maker module exceeds its no-harvest timeout and the board sets E5, confirming that the production halt is not a temporary pause.
E5 appears on the display alongside the ice maker icon
The Maytag MFX or MFI French door control panel shows E5 with the ice maker indicator active, distinguishing the code from other E-series faults.
Ice bin is empty and no water fill is audible
No water valve activation sound is heard at the start of a fill cycle, indicating the ice maker module has halted its operational sequence.
Water fill sound absent
The normal water-valve click and fill rush at the ice maker are no longer audible.
Possible Causes
Ice maker bail arm in the raised (off) position
The wire bail arm on Maytag MFI and MFX ice makers automatically raises when the bin is full. If it is stuck up or was manually raised, E5 may be set after the extended-off timeout.
DIY PossibleFreezer temperature too warm for ice production
The ice maker module requires freezer temperature at or below 15 °F to initiate a harvest cycle. If SY EF or a defrost fault has allowed the freezer to warm, E5 follows as a secondary code.
DIY PossibleFailed ice maker module (harvest motor or thermostat)
The ice maker module's internal harvest motor or the ejector arm thermostat has failed, preventing the module from completing a harvest cycle.
Requires ProfessionalSafe Checks You Can Do
-
1
Check the bail arm position and reset the ice maker
Open the freezer door and locate the wire bail arm on the ice maker module. It should be in the down (active) position. If it is raised, lower it by hand. Press and hold the ice maker test button (small button on the module face) for three seconds to initiate a test cycle and clear E5.
On Maytag MFX French door models the ice maker is in the upper freezer drawer compartment. On MFI side-by-side models it is on the left wall of the freezer section.
-
2
Verify freezer temperature is at or below 15 °F
Place an appliance thermometer in the center of the freezer for one hour and read the actual temperature. If it reads above 15 °F, address any active SY EF or dF codes first before diagnosing the ice maker module independently.
Ice production resumes automatically on Maytag Ice2O models once freezer temperature drops below 15 °F and the bail arm is in the down position. Allow two to four hours after correct temperature is confirmed.
When to Call a Professional
Contact a qualified technician if:
- Ice maker module draws no current on the harvest motor test
- Water inlet valve solenoid for the ice maker tests open on continuity
- E5 persists after confirming correct freezer temperature and bail arm position
