Maytag Refrigerator IC Error: Ice maker module fault
What Does Maytag Refrigerator Error Code IC Mean? IC on a Maytag refrigerator indicates an Ice maker module fault. This code appears on Maytag Ice2O and MFI French door models when the main control board detects a confirmed internal hardware failure within the ice maker module — not just a production timeout as with E5, […]
Quick Assessment
Answer to continue safely
Is it safe to keep using?
Yes. IC is isolated to the ice maker module. Refrigerator and freezer temperatures are not affected and food safety is maintained. Ice production is unavailable until the module is replaced.
Can I reset the code?
No. IC indicates a confirmed hardware failure inside the ice maker module. A power cycle will not restore module function. The module must be replaced to clear IC permanently.
When to stop immediately?
Stop if you notice: Test button produces no response — module is confirmed failed, Harvest motor is audible but ejector arm does not rotate — motor running but jammed or gear stripped.
Symptoms You May Notice
Ice maker does not cycle and no water fill sound is audible
The Ice2O or MFI ice maker module has halted its operational sequence completely — the harvest motor is silent, no water fill valve activation is heard, and the bin remains empty.
IC appears on the display alongside the ice maker status icon
The Maytag MFI or MFX control panel shows IC — distinguishable from other I-prefix codes like CI (ice maker commanded off) by the presence of a persistent fault indication.
Test cycle does not initiate when the test button is pressed
Pressing the test button on the ice maker module face for three seconds produces no motor response, no water fill, and no audible harvest sequence — the module has failed internally.
Ice bin remains empty
No ice accumulates in the bin despite the freezer being at the correct temperature.
Possible Causes
Failed ice maker harvest motor
The small motor inside the ice maker module that drives the ejector arm has burned out. When the motor does not turn the ejector arm, the harvest cycle cannot complete and IC is set.
DIY PossibleFailed ice maker module thermostat (ejector thermostat)
The thermostat inside the module that initiates harvest when the ice mold reaches freezing temperature has failed open, preventing the harvest cycle from starting regardless of mold temperature.
DIY PossibleIce maker module control board fault
The small integrated circuit board within the Maytag Ice2O module has failed, disabling the entire module. The module must be replaced as an assembly.
Requires ProfessionalSafe Checks You Can Do
-
1
Verify the ice maker is not switched off (CI vs IC)
Confirm the ice maker is set to the ON position on the Maytag control panel. If CI appears instead of IC, the ice maker has been commanded off and needs only to be turned back on. IC indicates a hardware fault even with the ice maker switched on.
On Maytag MFI French door models the ice maker on/off toggle is in the Settings or Options menu of the control panel, not a physical switch. On older MFX models a physical rocker switch is on the ice maker module face.

2
Press the ice maker test button for three seconds
Locate the test button on the front or bottom face of the ice maker module. Press and hold for three seconds. A functioning module will immediately begin a harvest cycle — you will hear the ejector arm motor turn and, after 20–30 seconds, the water fill valve will open. No response to the test button confirms internal module failure.
Run the test with the freezer at or below 15 °F. The module has an internal safety that prevents test cycle initiation if the mold temperature is above this threshold.
When to Call a Professional
Contact a qualified technician if:
- Module does not respond to test button after confirming correct freezer temperature
- Water inlet valve for ice maker measures open on continuity — valve also needs replacement
- IC reappears within one day of a module reset attempt
