Maytag Refrigerator SY CE Error: System communication error
What Does Maytag Refrigerator Error Code SY CE Mean? SY CE on a Maytag refrigerator stands for System Communication Error. The main control board and its secondary boards — the dispenser panel, user interface, and ice maker module — exchange continuous data over an internal serial bus. When that bus loses reliable signal, SY CE […]
Quick Assessment
Answer to continue safely
Is it safe to keep using?
No. A persistent SY CE means the Maytag cannot reliably control cooling, defrost cycles, or ice production. Food safety is at risk and the appliance should not be used until the fault is resolved.
Can I reset the code?
Yes. A breaker-level reset clears SY CE if the cause was a transient bus glitch. If the underlying board or harness has physically failed, the code returns within minutes.
When to stop immediately?
Stop if you notice: SY CE returns within minutes of any reset, Compartment temperatures climb more than 10 °F above set point.
Symptoms You May Notice
Dispenser panel completely dead
No water, ice, or button feedback from the dispenser — the panel appears powered off while the rest of the refrigerator operates.
Ice maker halts and does not resume harvest cycles
The Ice2O or MFI ice maker module cannot communicate harvest status or receive fill commands, so it stops producing ice and may indicate a fault via its onboard LED.
Fresh food or freezer compartment fails to cool despite compressor running
Temperature-related commands from the main board are not reaching the damper control or evaporator fan boards, causing cooling to become unreliable.
Main compartments still cool
The refrigerator and freezer sections maintain temperature — only the dispenser interface is affected.
Possible Causes
Loose or corroded communication harness connector
The ribbon cable or multi-pin connector between the main board and a secondary board has backed out or developed pin corrosion, breaking the data bus.
DIY PossibleFailed main control board
The main PCB's communication IC has failed, preventing it from transmitting or receiving data on the internal bus. Board replacement is required.
Requires ProfessionalFailed secondary module (dispenser, UI, or ice maker board)
A subordinate board has shorted internally and is pulling the data bus low, disrupting communication with all other modules on the same bus.
Requires ProfessionalSafe Checks You Can Do
-
1
Hard reset at the circuit breaker for five minutes
Turn off the Maytag refrigerator's dedicated circuit breaker for a full five minutes to discharge all boards. Restore power and observe whether SY CE reappears within ten minutes. A one-time bus glitch will not return; a hardware failure will.
A five-minute wait is important — a quick unplug-replug does not give capacitors on the Maytag MFI control boards enough time to fully discharge.

2
Reseat harness connectors near the main control board
Remove the lower front kick-plate grille (two retaining clips). Press each wire harness connector near the main control board firmly until it clicks fully seated. Inspect connector pins for corrosion or bent contacts using a flashlight before reseating.
On Maytag MFX models the main board is at the rear lower compartment. On MFI side-by-side models it is behind the lower front grille on the right side.
When to Call a Professional
Contact a qualified technician if:
- Code persists after hard reset and harness reseating
- Diagnostic mode identifies a specific board address as the failing node
- Visible burned pins or melted connector housing on inspection
