Maytag Refrigerator E2 Error: Fridge thermistor fault

What Does Maytag Refrigerator Error Code E2 Mean? E2 on a Maytag refrigerator indicates a fresh food compartment thermistor fault. The NTC temperature sensor in the fresh food section continuously reports compartment temperature to the main control board so it can position the air damper and regulate the compressor cycle. When the sensor signal falls […]

Quick Assessment

Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

Maybe. E2 is a medium-severity fault. The freezer section usually continues operating, and the fresh food compartment may maintain acceptable temperatures on the default control schedule. However, the Maytag should be repaired before it is relied upon for extended food storage.

Can I reset the code?

No. A power cycle does not fix the thermistor or harness fault. E2 returns as soon as the board rechecks the fresh food sensor reading after power is restored.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: Fresh food compartment temperature climbs above 45 °F, Thermistor measures open circuit or short circuit.

Symptoms You May Notice

Fresh food compartment temperature reads dashes or extreme value

The control panel shows "- -" or an invalid temperature because the board has no usable signal from the fresh food thermistor.

Fresh food section too warm or too cold

Without accurate temperature feedback the damper defaults to a fixed position, causing the fresh food side to over-cool or under-cool regardless of the set point.

Compressor run time noticeably longer or shorter than normal

The main board compensates for the missing fresh food sensor by running the compressor on a default schedule that does not match actual cooling demand.

Produce freezing in crisper drawer

Vegetables and fruits in the crisper show freeze damage because the control over-cools the compartment.

Possible Causes

1

Failed fresh food thermistor

The NTC thermistor located in the fresh food compartment air duct has drifted out of spec or failed. On Maytag MRT top-freezer models it is mounted on the back wall of the fresh food section.

DIY Possible
2

Damaged or disconnected thermistor harness

The two-conductor harness has a broken wire or a connector that has pulled out of its socket at the main board, severing the signal path.

DIY Possible
3

Main board fresh food sensor input failure

The analog input channel on the main control board has failed, reading the thermistor as out-of-range even when the sensor itself is within spec.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

Reseat the fresh food thermistor harness connector

Unplug the Maytag refrigerator. Access the main control board (behind the lower kick-plate grille on most MBF and MRT models). Locate the two-pin thermistor harness and press it firmly until it clicks. Restore power and check whether E2 clears.

If the connector appears corroded — green or white deposits on the pins — use a cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol to clean before reseating.

  2. 2

Measure thermistor resistance at room temperature

Unplug the refrigerator and disconnect the fresh food thermistor harness. Measure resistance across the thermistor leads — expect approximately 16,000–20,000 ohms at 68–72 °F on Maytag MBF and MRT models. An OL (open) or near-zero reading indicates sensor failure.

The fresh food thermistor is often clipped to the return-air grille duct in the upper-rear of the fresh food compartment on MBF models. Check the model-specific tech sheet for exact location.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • Thermistor measures correctly but E2 persists — board input channel failure
  • Harness shows visible wire damage inside the cabinet insulation routing
  • E2 appears alongside E1 or other thermistor codes simultaneously
