Maytag Refrigerator SY EF Error: Freezer evaporator fan fault
What Does Maytag Refrigerator Error Code SY EF Mean? SY EF on a Maytag refrigerator stands for System Evaporator Fan fault. The evaporator fan motor in the freezer compartment circulates chilled air over the evaporator coil and through both the freezer and fresh food sections. When the main control board detects that the fan motor […]
Quick Assessment
Answer to continue safely
Is it safe to keep using?
No. With the evaporator fan stopped, neither compartment can maintain safe temperatures. Perishables should be moved to an alternate refrigerator and the Maytag should not be used until the fault is repaired.
Can I reset the code?
No. SY EF indicates a real mechanical or electrical fault. A breaker reset may temporarily clear the display, but if the fan motor or board driver has failed, the code returns as soon as the control board rechecks the fan speed feedback signal.
When to stop immediately?
Stop if you notice: Freezer temperature exceeds 20 °F with the compressor audibly running, Fan blade is jammed by ice and manual defrost does not free it after 48 hours.
Symptoms You May Notice
Freezer temperature rises above 20 °F despite the compressor running
The compressor is chilling the evaporator coil, but without the fan to distribute cold air, the freezer compartment warms steadily and ice cream softens or food thaws.
Unusually quiet freezer — no airflow noise audible
The normal low hum and airflow from the evaporator fan is absent. Opening the freezer door reveals still, warm air rather than the expected cold draft.
Fresh food compartment also warming
Because the evaporator fan supplies chilled air to both sections through the damper assembly, the fresh food side of Maytag MFX and MFI models loses cooling once the fan fails.
Silence from freezer interior
The normal hum of the evaporator fan inside the freezer is completely absent.
Possible Causes
Failed evaporator fan motor
The DC brushless motor winding has burned out or the bearing has seized, preventing the blade from spinning. This is the most common cause of SY EF on Maytag MFI and Ice2O models.
DIY PossibleIce buildup jamming the fan blade
Excessive frost from a defrost system failure has accumulated around the fan blade, physically blocking it. The motor may still receive power but cannot turn the blade.
DIY PossibleMain control board fan driver circuit failure
The board's PWM driver output for the evaporator fan has failed, supplying no power to an otherwise functional motor. Board replacement is required.
Requires ProfessionalSafe Checks You Can Do
-
1
Check for airflow at the freezer rear vent
Open the freezer door, press the door switch to extinguish the interior light, and hold your hand near the rear vent grille. Airflow should be clearly felt within five seconds. No airflow with the compressor audible confirms the fan is not running.
On Maytag MFI French door models the evaporator fan vent is at the top-rear of the freezer drawer compartment behind the back panel.

2
Attempt a manual defrost to clear ice blockage
Unplug the Maytag refrigerator and leave both doors and the freezer drawer open for 24–48 hours to fully thaw any ice surrounding the fan blade. Place towels on the floor to catch melt water. Plug the unit back in and listen for the fan to restart.
Do not use a heat gun or hair dryer near the evaporator coil — thermal shock can crack the coil fins. Allow natural air thawing only.
When to Call a Professional
Contact a qualified technician if:
- Motor measures open winding (infinite resistance) on an ohmmeter continuity test
- Fan runs after manual defrost but SY EF returns within days — ongoing defrost failure
- Board fan driver output measures 0 V with the motor connector unplugged
