Maytag Refrigerator OP Error: Door open alert

What Does Maytag Refrigerator Error Code OP Mean? OP — sometimes shown as Op — on a Maytag refrigerator is a door-open alert. After a door or drawer has been ajar beyond the built-in threshold (typically three to five minutes), the main control board activates the OP warning and an audible alarm. This code appears […]

Quick Assessment

Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

Yes. OP is a door-open warning, not a component fault. Close the door and clear the alert. If the gasket or switch is faulty, schedule repair, but the refrigerator continues operating in the interim.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. Pressing any control pad button silences the OP alarm. It returns if the door-open condition recurs or the switch remains faulty.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: OP returns immediately after closing and latching the door, Temperature has climbed more than 10 °F above set point.

Symptoms You May Notice

Door open alarm sounding

A repeating beep sequence sounds after the door has been open beyond the safety timer.

Compartment temperature rising above set point

Warm room air is entering the refrigerator, causing temperatures to climb. The alarm is meant to catch this before food safety is compromised.

Alarm persists even after closing the door

If the door switch is faulty or the door is not sealing fully, OP continues sounding after the door appears to be shut.

Interior light on when door ajar

The compartment light is illuminated, confirming the door is not fully sealed.

Possible Causes

1

Door left open intentionally or by an item blocking closure

A grocery bag, shelving item, or drawer protruding past the door seal line prevents the door from fully closing and latching.

DIY Possible
2

Worn or torn door gasket

A damaged gasket on a Maytag MFF or MFX French door panel no longer creates an airtight seal, causing the door-switch circuit to read the door as ajar.

DIY Possible
3

Failed or stuck door switch / reed switch

The magnetic reed switch embedded in the door frame has failed in the open position, causing the board to believe the door is perpetually open.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

Close the door firmly and clear the alert

Ensure both French door panels are fully latched and the freezer drawer is fully closed. Press any button on the control panel to silence the OP alarm. Visually inspect around the door seal for any item blocking complete closure.

Run a dollar bill around the door gasket — if it slides out easily without resistance, the gasket is not sealing and needs replacement.

  2. 2

Test the door switch by pressing and releasing it manually

Locate the door switch (small plunger or magnetic sensor in the door frame). Press it in and hold for two seconds — the interior light should extinguish. Release it — the light should return. A switch that does not respond correctly is faulty.

On Maytag MFI models the door switch is recessed in the top-center of the fresh food opening. On MRT top-freezer models it is on the upper hinge post.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • Gasket is torn, hardened, or visibly compressed and replacement is needed
  • Door switch tests open (infinite resistance) with a multimeter on continuity
  • Door hinge sag causes the panel to misalign and not compress the gasket
