Maytag Range PF Error: Power failure mid-cycle

What Does Maytag Range Error Code PF Mean? PF on a Maytag MGR gas range or MER electric range stands for Power Failure. The electronic oven control displays this code when power is restored after an interruption that occurred while a self-clean cycle was active. PF is an informational notice, not a hardware fault — […]

Quick Assessment

Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

Yes. PF is an informational code indicating a prior event, not an active fault. Once the Cancel pad is pressed, the door unlocks, and the code clears, the Maytag range is safe for normal use. Inspect the oven cavity for incomplete cleaning residue before resuming cooking.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. Pressing Cancel on the Maytag range control panel clears the PF code immediately. No breaker reset is required unless the door remains locked, in which case a 5-minute breaker reset after full cool-down can prompt the unlock sequence.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: Door remains locked more than 90 minutes after pressing Cancel, Burn marks or arcing visible at the 240V outlet or power cord plug.

Symptoms You May Notice

Clock reset after power outage

The range display shows a power failure indicator when power returns after an outage or breaker trip.

Oven door may remain in the locked position

If the power failure occurred after the latch locked but before the cycle completed and cooled, the EOC may keep the door locked until the cavity cools to the unlock threshold.

Self-clean cycle shows as incomplete

The oven cavity may have residual char or grease if the cleaning cycle was interrupted early — the AquaLift steam-clean cycle is especially vulnerable to incomplete cleaning if cut short.

Oven cavity has cooled down

The oven interior is at room temperature because the self-clean cycle was interrupted by the outage.

Possible Causes

1

Household power outage during self-clean

A utility power interruption of any duration — from a millisecond brownout to an extended outage — while the Maytag range self-clean cycle is active triggers PF on power restoration.

DIY Possible
2

Range circuit breaker tripped during self-clean

The high current draw of a pyrolytic self-clean cycle on MER electric models can trip a marginal circuit breaker, cutting power mid-cycle and triggering PF when the breaker is reset.

DIY Possible
3

Loose range power cord or outlet connection

A loose 240V power cord plug or a failing outlet can cause momentary power loss during the self-clean cycle's peak current draw, triggering PF without a true household outage.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

Press Cancel and wait for the door to unlock

Press the Cancel pad to clear the PF code. If the oven door is still locked, allow the cavity to cool — the EOC will automatically unlock the door once the temperature drops below approximately 550°F. Do not force the door.

On Maytag AquaLift MER models the unlock temperature is reached more quickly than on pyrolytic self-clean models — typically within 15–30 minutes of cancel. On standard self-clean MGR and MER models allow 45–60 minutes.

  2. 2

Inspect the range power cord and outlet

After the oven has cooled and the door is unlocked, pull the Maytag range away from the wall and inspect the 240V power cord plug for loose prongs, burn marks, or signs of arcing at the outlet receptacle.

If the circuit breaker tripped during self-clean on an MER electric model, check whether the breaker is the correct amperage for the range (typically 40–50A). An undersized or aging breaker may need replacement by a licensed electrician.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • Circuit breaker trips on every self-clean attempt — may indicate an undersized breaker or a developing short in the MER bake element
  • Power cord or outlet shows arcing damage and requires replacement by a licensed electrician
  • Door does not unlock after full cool-down — see F5E1 for door-lock motor service
