Maytag Range F2E0 Error: Oven over-temperature
What Does Maytag Range Error Code F2E0 Mean? F2E0 on a Maytag MGR gas range or MER electric range means the electronic oven control detected that the oven cavity temperature exceeded the safe operating threshold — typically above 590°F during normal cooking or above 950°F during a self-clean cycle on AquaLift models. As a thermal […]
Quick Assessment
Answer to continue safely
Is it safe to keep using?
No. An over-temperature event indicates the oven cannot regulate heat within safe limits. On Maytag MGR gas ranges continued operation risks a gas valve remaining open at extreme temperatures. Do not use the oven until the root cause — sensor, relay, or ventilation — has been corrected.
Can I reset the code?
Yes. A breaker reset clears the F2E0 code after the cavity cools, but does not address the underlying fault. If the sensor is drifting or the relay is welded, the code will return at the same point in the heat cycle. Use reset only for diagnostic purposes.
When to stop immediately?
Stop if you notice: Code returns within the first 15 minutes of every Bake cycle, Visible smoke or flames inside the oven cavity at normal temperatures.
Symptoms You May Notice
Oven shuts off abruptly during a cook or self-clean cycle
The bake element or gas burner cuts out suddenly mid-cycle, the display shows F2E0, and an alarm tone sounds — indicating the cavity exceeded the thermal cutoff threshold.
Strong burning smell or visible smoke from the oven
Over-temperature conditions char accumulated grease and food residue inside Maytag MER and MGR oven cavities, producing smoke that may persist even after the oven shuts down.
Oven door is very hot to the touch on the outer face
Excessive cavity temperatures conduct heat through the door insulation, making the exterior door surface abnormally hot during or after an F2E0 fault event.
Oven exterior unusually hot
The range's exterior panels feel significantly hotter than normal to the touch.
Possible Causes
Failed oven temperature sensor sending a false low reading
A drifting or failed RTD sensor under-reports the actual cavity temperature, causing the EOC to continue energizing the heating circuit well above the safe limit before the hardware thermal fuse trips.
DIY PossibleWelded heating-circuit relay on the EOC board
A relay with welded contacts cannot interrupt the bake element or gas valve circuit when commanded, allowing the cavity to overheat uncontrolled until the hardware thermal limit trips.
Requires ProfessionalBlocked oven vent or failed cooling fan
A restricted convection vent or a failed cooling fan on Maytag MER convection models traps heat inside the cavity, driving the temperature above the sensor's compensation range.
DIY PossibleSafe Checks You Can Do
-
1
Inspect and clear the oven vent and convection fan
Locate the oven vent (typically at the rear of the cooktop surface on MER models) and confirm it is not blocked by foil, cookware, or grease buildup. On Maytag convection ranges, listen for the convection fan running during preheat — a silent fan indicates a motor failure.
Never cover oven vents or the convection fan opening with aluminum foil — blocked airflow is one of the most common causes of over-temperature faults on AquaLift self-clean models.

2
Measure oven temperature sensor resistance
Unplug the Maytag range, disconnect the RTD sensor two-wire harness at the upper-rear oven wall, and measure resistance across the terminals. A good sensor reads 1,080–1,090 ohms at room temperature (68°F). Replace the sensor if the reading is below 900 ohms or above 1,200 ohms.
On Maytag MGR gas ranges the sensor harness passes through a grommeted hole in the oven cavity wall — inspect the grommet for heat damage that could cause a short affecting the temperature reading.

When to Call a Professional
Contact a qualified technician if:
- Sensor tests within spec but over-temperature persists — indicates welded EOC relay
- MGR gas range diagnosis involves gas valve testing — requires a licensed technician
- Thermal fuse on the EOC board has blown and requires board replacement
