Maytag Washer UL Error: Unbalanced load

What Does Maytag Washer Error Code uL Mean? uL on Maytag Bravos XL, Maxima, MVWC, and Centennial washers means the drum is out of balance during spin. The control detects the imbalance via the spin sensor and either redistributes the load with a slower wiggle cycle or reduces the final spin speed to prevent damage […]

Quick Assessment

Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

Yes. uL is a protective code. The washer self-resolves at a lower spin speed. Redistribute loads to reduce future uL.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. Cancel, redistribute, restart. Code clears immediately.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: uL persists on even small, well-distributed loads, Visible banging or cabinet movement during spin.

Symptoms You May Notice

Spin cycle pauses and restarts repeatedly

The Bravos attempts spin, detects imbalance, stops, tries again — several cycles before uL shows.

Loud banging during high-speed spin

The drum is clearly hitting the cabinet as it tries to spin; the washer may "walk" across the floor.

Clothes come out still wet

After uL resolves, the cycle completes at a lower spin speed, leaving clothes wetter than normal.

Heavy items bunched on one side

Opening the lid reveals towels, jeans, or blankets clumped to one side of the drum.

Possible Causes

1

Uneven load distribution

A single heavy item (jeans, towel) on one side of the drum.

DIY Possible
2

Washer not level

Legs not leveled — washer tilts forward or side-to-side.

DIY Possible
3

Damaged or worn suspension

On Maxima front-load, one of the four shock absorbers has weakened.

4

Loose counterweights

The concrete or plastic counterweights on Maxima drums have loosened from their mounting bolts.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

    Redistribute the load

Open the washer after the spin stops. Rearrange the contents evenly around the drum or agitator.

A single heavy item in a load of light ones almost always causes uL. Spread it out.

  2. 2

    Verify the washer is level

Use a small bubble level on top of the Bravos or Maxima front edge. Adjust the front feet by turning clockwise to raise, counter-clockwise to lower. Rock the washer to confirm no wobble.

A washer that is even 1/4 inch out of level will uL consistently on full-speed spin.
