Maytag Washer F9E1 Error: Long drain — water stuck

What Does Maytag Washer Error Code F9E1 Mean? F9E1 on Maytag Bravos XL, Maxima, and MVWB washers means the drain phase of the cycle did not complete in time. The control board allows roughly 8 minutes for a normal drain; if the pressure sensor still reads water at that point, F9E1 is displayed and the […]

Quick Assessment

Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

No. Running more cycles on a clogged drain can overheat the pump motor. Stop and clear the drain path first.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. Cancel, unplug 60 seconds. F9E1 clears but returns on the next drain cycle if the cause is not addressed.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: F9E1 returns after filter and hose are verified clean, Water is visibly leaking from the bottom of the washer.

Symptoms You May Notice

Standing water remains in drum

The drain cycle stops partway through and water remains visible inside the drum.

Drain pump runs continuously without progress

You hear the pump motor running but the water level is unchanged after 5–8 minutes.

Pump cycles on and off without draining

The Maxima drain pump starts, runs briefly, stops, restarts — the control tries multiple fill/drain cycles before giving up.

Drain hose not kinked

Visual inspection shows the drain hose is properly routed with no visible kinks or blockages.

Possible Causes

1

Drain pump filter clogged

Same root cause as F0E1 on many models — accumulated debris blocks the filter and the drain cycle cannot complete.

DIY Possible
2

Drain hose kinked or installed too high

Hose is looped above the 96-inch maximum standpipe height, or kinked behind the washer.

DIY Possible
3

Failed drain pump impeller

Pump motor runs but the impeller is cracked or broken — no water movement.

4

Blocked household drain line

The standpipe or laundry drain line is partially clogged — water backs up faster than the washer can push it.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

    Clear the drain pump filter

Unplug the washer. Open the front access panel at the bottom-right of Bravos XL. Put a towel and shallow pan underneath. Unscrew the white filter cap slowly; let 1–2 gallons drain.

Debris is almost always visible — coins, lint, hair ties, bobby pins.

  2. 2

Check drain hose height and standpipe

Pull the washer out. Hose should rise no more than 96 inches above the floor before entering the standpipe, and the standpipe itself must be at least 1.25 inches in diameter with an air gap.

A sealed standpipe with no air gap creates siphon problems that show as F9E1.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • Pump is silent on drain — likely motor failure
  • Pump runs but no flow even with clean filter — impeller damage
  • Household drain backs up when you run a test with a bucket of water
