Maytag Washer F0E1 Error: Drain fault

What Does Maytag Washer Error Code F0E1 Mean? F0E1 on Maytag Bravos XL, Maxima, Centennial, and MVWB washers means the control board expected to see zero water in the tub at a specific point in the cycle and the pressure sensor still detects water. It is almost always a physical drain obstruction — the pump […]

Quick Assessment

Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

No. Do not force another cycle — running on a clogged drain can burn out the Bravos drain pump motor and turn a $15 filter cleaning into a $195 pump replacement.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. Cancel the cycle, unplug for 60 seconds, and restart. The F0E1 clears on reboot but will return in the next cycle if the drain path is still blocked.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: F0E1 returns after cleaning the filter and verifying drain hose routing, Any burning smell from the pump area.

Symptoms You May Notice

Water not draining from tub

The washer attempts to drain but water remains in the tub, pausing the cycle mid-drain.

Standing water left in the drum after cycle ends

The washer will not proceed to the spin phase until water is removed, so clothes sit saturated in several inches of residual water.

Drain pump audible but water level does not drop

You can hear the Bravos drain pump running, but the tub water level stays the same — a partial blockage rather than a dead pump.

Standing water visible in tub

Looking inside the washer reveals water that should have drained.

Possible Causes

1

Clogged drain pump filter

Coins, hairpins, lint buildup, or a sock lodged in the Bravos drain pump filter housing preventing water flow.

DIY Possible
2

Kinked or blocked drain hose

Drain hose installed too high, kinked behind the washer, or blocked at the standpipe — all common on Maxima installations.

DIY Possible
3

Failed drain pump motor

The drain pump motor windings have failed open or the impeller is broken, common on Bravos units past the 6-year mark.

Requires Professional

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

    Clear the pump filter

Unplug the washer, open the front access panel at the bottom-right of Bravos XL models, place a towel and shallow pan underneath, and slowly unscrew the white pump filter cap counter-clockwise.

Expect 1–2 gallons of water. Remove any debris, rinse the filter, reinstall snugly.

  2. 2

    Check the drain hose routing

Pull the Maytag away from the wall and confirm the drain hose is not kinked, that the standpipe is at least 30 inches high but not more than 96 inches, and that the hose enters the standpipe without a tight seal.

A sealed standpipe creates back-pressure that triggers F0E1 even with a good pump.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • Pump runs but flow to standpipe is zero even with clean filter
  • Pump is silent on a drain cycle — motor windings likely open
  • Washer is over 8 years old and has never had pump service
