Maytag Dryer F02 Error: Stuck keypad button

What Does Maytag Dryer Error Code F02 Mean? F02 indicates the user interface board on a Maytag dryer has detected a key that has been held in the pressed position for longer than the firmware’s stuck-key threshold. Maytag Bravos XL and Centennial dryers (MEDB and MEDX series) use this fault to prevent a stuck or […]

Quick Assessment

Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

No. F02 prevents cycle initiation. The dryer cannot be used until the stuck key condition is resolved.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. A hard reset clears F02 if the key frees itself. If the mechanical stick or board fault persists the code will return immediately.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: F02 returns immediately after reset with no key visibly stuck, Liquid entered the control panel through button apertures.

Symptoms You May Notice

Control panel unresponsive

One or more buttons do not respond normally — the dryer will not accept a cycle selection or start command.

Specific button feels physically stuck or spongy

Pressing buttons reveals that one key does not spring back properly or feels tacky, indicating a mechanical stick in the membrane switch or knob assembly.

F02 appears after liquid spill near the control panel

Detergent, water, or cleaning spray that reached the control panel can cause a keypad switch to register a constant press, triggering F02.

One button area feels stuck

A specific area of the touchpad does not spring back or feels physically stuck when pressed.

Possible Causes

1

Mechanically stuck membrane key

A push-button key on the membrane touchpad has stuck in the depressed position due to age, wear, or debris under the pad. This is the most common cause on Maytag Bravos models with membrane-style controls.

2

Liquid or residue under the keypad

Liquid that entered behind the membrane panel is creating a continuous electrical contact on one key switch. On MEDB series models the panel has limited sealing around button apertures.

3

Failed user interface (UI) board

The UI board itself has an internal short causing a false constant-press signal. Replacing the keypad panel does not resolve the issue; the UI board requires replacement.

Requires Professional

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

Hard reset and test each button

Unplug the dryer for 1 minute. Restore power and — before pressing anything — let the panel initialize. Then press each button individually and release it. Listen and feel for a key that does not click cleanly or stays depressed. Press and release any suspect key firmly several times to free a stuck membrane switch.

On Maytag rotary-knob models (Centennial), check that the cycle selection knob is fully seated and not jammed between positions.

  2. 2

Clean around buttons for moisture or residue

With power off, use a dry cloth to clean the face of the control panel around all buttons. Do not spray liquid cleaner directly at the panel. If a button area is visibly wet or tacky, leave the dryer unplugged for several hours to allow moisture to evaporate before restoring power.

Never use spray cleaners directly on appliance control panels — liquid ingress under membrane switches is a leading cause of F02 and permanent UI board failure.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • UI board replacement required on MEDB/MEDX models
  • Keypad membrane panel replacement and alignment
  • Moisture damage assessment for the full control panel assembly
