Maytag Dryer PF Error: Power failure during cycle

What Does Maytag Dryer Error Code PF Mean? PF stands for Power Failure. Maytag Bravos XL, Centennial, and Maxima dryers — including MEDB and MEDX models — record a PF event whenever supply voltage drops out during an active cycle. The control board logs the interruption, stops the cycle, and waits for user acknowledgment before […]

Quick Assessment

Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

Yes. PF is informational and clears with a button press. The dryer is fully operational once the code is acknowledged.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. Any button press clears PF. No technician visit is needed for an isolated PF event following a power outage.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: PF occurs several times per week with no known outages, Burning smell near the power cord or terminal block area.

Symptoms You May Notice

PF appears immediately after power returns

The display shows PF as soon as the dryer is powered up again, confirming the cycle was interrupted by a power loss.

Cycle stopped mid-run with damp laundry

Clothes are partially dry and the previously selected cycle settings may be cleared, requiring the user to restart manually.

Clock or timer display reset to default

Maytag Bravos models with clock displays show a blinking or zeroed time after a PF event, indicating control memory was reset.

Laundry still damp in drum

Clothes remain wet because the drying cycle was interrupted by the power loss.

Possible Causes

1

Utility outage or tripped circuit breaker

A grid interruption or a tripped 30-amp double-pole breaker cut power to the dryer. This is the overwhelming cause of PF and involves no fault in the appliance itself.

DIY Possible
2

Loose 240V power cord terminal

The 4-wire cord connection at the terminal block on the back of the dryer has a loosened screw. Intermittent contact causes repeated PF events without household outages.

3

Control board power supply degradation

Rarely, the MEDB or MEDX control board misinterprets brief voltage sags as complete power failures. This indicates a degraded board that will eventually need replacement.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

Press Start or Cancel to clear PF

Press any button — Start, Cancel, or Power — to acknowledge the PF notice. The code clears and the dryer returns to standby. Restart the cycle if needed; check that laundry is dry before assuming the previous cycle completed.

A single PF after a known outage needs no further action. If PF appears repeatedly without any household power disruption, investigate the supply circuit.

  2. 2

Check circuit breaker and power cord if PF recurs

Open the breaker panel and confirm the 30-amp double-pole breaker serving the dryer is fully in the ON position — sometimes one leg trips without the breaker visually moving fully to OFF. If the breaker is fine and PF recurs, switch off the breaker and have a technician inspect the terminal block on the dryer for loose screw connections.

Never work on the dryer terminal block with power applied. The 240V terminal carries lethal voltage.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • Terminal block inspection and tightening required
  • Control board power supply failure confirmed by technician
  • Power cord damage or arcing found at the terminal block
