Maytag Refrigerator Compressor Relay Fire Recall — CPSC #09-145

Advisory summary — On March 10, 2009, Maytag and the CPSC announced the recall of approximately 1.6 million refrigerators across multiple brands due to a compressor relay fire hazard (CPSC Recall #09-145).

Hazard

An electrical failure in the relay — the small component on the compressor that controls when the refrigerator’s cooling cycle starts — can cause the relay to overheat and ignite surrounding materials. At the time of the announcement, Maytag had received 41 reports of relay ignition incidents, including 16 cases of property damage ranging from smoke damage to extensive kitchen destruction. Although no injuries were reported, the concealed location of the compressor relay (behind the lower rear panel) means a fire can develop undetected. The overheating relay can ignite insulation, cardboard backing, and cabinetry adjacent to the refrigerator.

How to identify

The model and serial number label is located inside the refrigerator compartment, typically on the left side wall near the top or along the door frame. Write down your full model number and compare the first two to three characters to the affected model prefixes above. Serial numbers must also end with specific two-letter combinations — the CPSC recall page provides the complete list. If you are unsure, call Maytag at (866) 533-9817 or visit repair.maytag.com with your model and serial number to confirm whether your unit is covered.

What to do

  1. Check your model and serial numbers against the affected list at the CPSC recall page linked below.
  2. If your refrigerator is covered, call Maytag at (866) 533-9817 to schedule a free in-home repair — a technician will replace the compressor relay at no cost.
  3. Do not attempt to replace the relay yourself; improper replacement can create additional hazards.
  4. Do not return the refrigerator to a retailer — the repair is done in your home.

Urgency level

High. With 41 documented relay ignition incidents and 16 cases of property damage, this recall should be addressed promptly. If your refrigerator matches the affected model prefixes, schedule the free repair before continuing use.
