Advisory summary — Failure to clean a clothes dryer’s lint trap and exhaust vent is a leading cause of residential appliance fires in the United States. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) estimates that dryers cause approximately 2,900 home fires annually, with lint cited as the leading material ignited.
Hazard
Lint is highly combustible. With every load, lint bypasses the screen filter and accumulates inside the vent duct, elbows, and the termination cap on the exterior of your home. As buildup increases, airflow is restricted, causing the dryer’s exhaust temperature to rise. When temperatures exceed the ignition point of accumulated lint — typically between 400°F and 500°F — a duct fire can start. Maytag electric dryers and gas dryers are both susceptible; gas dryers carry the additional risk of incomplete combustion if the vent is blocked, which can elevate carbon monoxide levels inside the home.
Affected units
- Brand: All Maytag dryer models (electric and gas)
- Product lines: Maytag Bravos, Maytag Centennial, Maytag Dependable Care, Maytag Maxima, and commercial-grade Maytag dryers
- Risk increases with: Duct runs longer than 8 feet, duct runs with multiple 90-degree elbows, flexible plastic or foil accordion duct (instead of rigid metal), and infrequent cleaning
How to identify
Warning signs of a lint-clogged vent include: clothes taking more than one cycle to dry fully; the dryer cabinet feeling hot to the touch on the exterior; a burning or musty smell during operation; the exterior vent flap barely opening or failing to open during operation; and the dryer shutting off early due to thermal overload. Lint accumulation is invisible inside a duct — the only reliable method to confirm cleanliness is a professional inspection with a camera or regular annual cleaning.
What to do
- Clean the lint screen before or after every single load — remove lint by hand and wash the screen with warm soapy water every month to clear detergent residue that reduces airflow.
- Inspect and clean the full exhaust duct system at least once per year; twice annually for households doing more than 5 loads per week.
- Use a dryer vent cleaning kit (flexible brush + drill attachment) or hire a certified chimney or vent cleaning professional.
- Replace flexible accordion-style plastic or foil duct with rigid or semi-rigid metal duct, which resists kinking and does not trap lint as readily.
- Ensure the exterior vent cap opens freely and is not obstructed by nesting material, paint, or debris.
- Never run the dryer when you leave home or while sleeping.
Urgency level
Medium-High. Lint fires are largely preventable with annual maintenance. If you have not cleaned your dryer duct in more than 12 months, schedule the cleaning before the next heavy-use period (autumn/winter).
