Advisory summary — Maytag Neptune front-load washing machines produced between 1997 and 2004 are prone to chronic mold and mildew accumulation inside the door seal and tub, leading to persistent odors that transfer to laundry. A nationwide class-action settlement was reached in 2005 covering more than two million affected machines.
Hazard
The Neptune’s rubber door gasket and the space between the outer tub and the door boot trap moisture, detergent residue, and lint after each wash cycle. Without adequate ventilation and routine cleaning, this environment supports rapid mold and mildew growth. Exposure to mold-contaminated clothing and linens can irritate skin, eyes, and the respiratory system, particularly for individuals with mold allergies or asthma. Additionally, door latch, wax motor, and motor-control board failures were documented in many units, and in some cases contributed to standing water that accelerated biological growth.
Affected units
- Brand: Maytag
- Product line: Neptune front-load washers (including stackable configurations)
- All Neptune models purchased: April 1, 1997 through August 9, 2004
- Estimated units covered by settlement: More than 2 million (United States)
- Settlement announced: 2005
How to identify
Maytag Neptune front-load washers have model numbers beginning with MAH (e.g., MAH3000, MAH4000, MAH5000, MAH6700 series). The model and serial number label is on the door jamb inside the loading opening. Stackable Neptune laundry centers carry model numbers beginning with MLE or MDE. If your unit has a round porthole door, a rubber bellows door seal, and a model number in the MAH/MLE/MDE family purchased before August 2004, it falls within the settlement class.
What to do
- Inspect the rubber door gasket by folding it back — look and smell for black or gray mold colonies. Wipe with a diluted bleach solution (1 tablespoon bleach per quart of water) and a microfiber cloth.
- Run a hot-water cleaning cycle monthly using a washer-cleaning tablet or 1 cup of white vinegar added directly to the drum.
- Leave the door ajar after every wash cycle to allow the drum and gasket to dry completely.
- Switch to HE (high-efficiency) low-sudsing detergent, and use no more than the recommended amount — excess suds leave residue that feeds mold growth.
- If mold has penetrated the gasket material, the gasket should be replaced. Maytag Neptune door gaskets (part number 22003483 or equivalent) are widely available from appliance parts suppliers.
Urgency level
Medium. This is a maintenance and health advisory, not a fire-safety recall. However, persistent mold exposure poses real health risks, particularly for allergy-prone individuals. Address gasket cleaning and door-ventilation habits immediately, and replace a contaminated gasket promptly.
