Advisory summary — On March 27, 2003, Maytag Corp. and the CPSC announced the recall of approximately 23,000 Maytag Gemini dual-oven gas ranges (model MGR6772) due to a delayed ignition flashback fire hazard in the upper oven (CPSC Recall #03-099).
Hazard
When the upper oven’s self-clean or broil function is used simultaneously with the lower oven, a build-up of unburned gas can occur. When ignition is delayed, the accumulated gas can flash back toward the user when it finally ignites, causing a sudden burst of flame. Maytag received nine reports of flashback fire incidents, including three cases of minor burn injuries and multiple incidents where consumers suffered singed hair or clothing. The hazard is most acute when both ovens are running simultaneously and the upper oven is slow to light.
Affected units
- Brand: Maytag
- Product line: Gemini dual-oven freestanding gas range
- Model number: MGR6772
- Affected serial numbers: Beginning with AJ through AX, or CA through CC
- Sold: July 2002 through February 2003
- Retail price at time of sale: from $1,300
- Estimated units recalled: Approximately 23,000 (United States)
How to identify
The model and serial number label on Maytag freestanding ranges is located inside the storage drawer at the bottom of the range, or on the back panel behind the range. Pull out the storage drawer and look along the front frame, or check the back of the unit. The model number must be MGR6772, and the serial number must begin with two capital letters falling in the ranges AJ–AX or CA–CC. If you no longer have the documentation and cannot read the back panel label, contact Maytag with the original purchase receipt to verify coverage.
What to do
- Immediately stop using the upper oven’s self-clean and broil features until the recall repair is completed.
- Do not operate both the upper and lower ovens simultaneously.
- Contact Maytag to arrange a free in-home repair — a technician will service the ignition system to eliminate the delayed-ignition risk.
- If you smell gas before ignition, turn off the range, ventilate the kitchen, and do not attempt to re-light until the unit has been serviced.
Urgency level
High. Three reported burn injuries make this a priority repair. Stop using the affected oven functions immediately and schedule the free repair before the next cooking session involving the upper oven.
