Maytag microwave overheating recall — On April 7, 2016, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Whirlpool Corporation issued a recall of certain over-the-range microwaves sold under the Maytag, Whirlpool, Amana, and Jenn-Air brands. The affected units can overheat during normal use due to a defect in the magnetron or high-voltage circuit, posing a fire hazard to homeowners.
Recall Details
- CPSC Recall Number: 16-131
- Date Announced: April 7, 2016
- Units Affected: Approximately 21,000 over-the-range microwave ovens
- Affected Models: Maytag MMV4205, MMV4206, MMV5208, and select Whirlpool WMH53520, WMH53521 models
- Manufacturing Period: March 2014 through September 2015
Hazard Description
The magnetron — the component that generates microwave energy for cooking — can overheat and transfer excessive heat to surrounding internal components, including wiring insulation and the plastic housing. In some units, the high-voltage circuit fails to regulate power delivery properly, causing the magnetron to run hotter than design specifications allow. This overheating can result in smoke, melting of internal plastic parts, and in severe cases an open fire within the microwave cavity or behind the control panel. Because over-the-range microwaves are mounted above cooking surfaces, fire from these units can spread to overhead cabinetry and ventilation ductwork.
Incidents Reported
At the time of the recall, Whirlpool had received approximately 8 reports of microwaves overheating, including 2 reports of fire and 3 reports of smoke or burning odor. No injuries were reported. One incident resulted in minor damage to surrounding cabinetry above the range.
What You Should Do
- Check the model and serial number printed on the label inside the microwave door frame against the affected models listed on the CPSC recall page.
- If your microwave is affected, stop using it immediately and disconnect power at the circuit breaker or by unplugging the unit.
- Contact Whirlpool at 1-800-553-4022 to arrange a free in-home repair or replacement of the affected components.
- Do not attempt to repair the magnetron or high-voltage circuit yourself — these components carry lethal voltage even when the microwave is unplugged.
